Censure on social media is something we all know about; but how does that censure works? Between the contents Instagram censure we can found, women nipples, Spam, pictures pro violence or even content which goes against the law.

Pichagram: the new social network where censure does not exist

Nowadays, Pichagram is the app that have faced the current trouble of the censure. The app was inaugurated the 10th of september 2019. This app was created by Bran Solo, a spanish artist and computer programmer. Besides, it has been managed by the circle of artists Paloma Negra. Today, it has more than 8.200 users. “The rhythm of growth is exponential” affirms Bran Solo.

As Instagram censures each publication that shows nudes, bootys, genitals or even nipples; lots of pictures have been necessarily eliminated from the social network. But not only publications, profiles can also be censored or limited. This politic of censure has been strongly criticized since for many people is unfair. In fact, nudes are censured but if they are used for business or marketing, surprisingly, they are allowed. So, ¿who choose the criteria of censure?

This is the reason why Pichagram was created, as a kind of protest. The main objective of this app is to give a space of freedom to those artist that are censored because their art shows naked bodies. As its fundator says: “We do not want to be the new Instagram. Pichagram is a social experiment and an active complain to unjustified censure.” Furthermore, the webapp includes a content filter that divides art content from the rest. For the time being, the app is not at Play Store or Apple Store. In order to access to it, they provide the link at their webpage or web version.

Paloma Negra, the circle of artists that has managed the creation of the app, it is as association which main aim is to help new artists, giving them resources and visibility. Bran Solo and Daniel El Dibujo where the founders of this project. As Bran Solo says: “The problem comes when a female breast or any kind of artistic nude becomes sexual content. Including the work of big masters of painting or sculpture”. For this reason, he explains that those artists needed a social network where they could share their work without censure. “We knew that many users would share everything because it only eliminates illegal content. So, with humor, we named Pichagram” joked the fundator. Paloma negra clarifies that they understand that Instagram must have a censure politic in order to protect minors, but the best option would be not to ban it for everyone. That is also the reason why Pichagram is only for adults.
